August - Digital Time Capsule

And just like that, the last long weekend of the summer is over. We’ve put together the top news of the month and are locking it in to August’s Digital Time Capsule below!

Paralympics 2020(1)

August 24 marked the start of the Tokyo 2020(1) Paralympic Games and Canada took home a total of 21 medals (including five gold!). Shoutout to Canadian swimmers, Aurélie Rivard, who took home two gold medals, and Danielle Dorris, who now holds a new world record in the S7 50m butterfly.

Swipe up feature on IG

Instead of ‘Swipe Up’, Instagram users may be saying ‘Press the Sticker’ - or maybe something a bit more catchy. The Verge has reported that starting August 30, Instagram will be replacing the swipe up feature with ‘link stickers’ that can be placed directly onto the story. The tappable ‘link stickers’ will give users more creative control when creating their story. Similar to the ‘swipe up’ feature the new ‘link stickers’ will only be available for users with 10,000+ followers.

Shopify x TikTok

Over quarantine season one, two, and three, YouTube and TikTok have seen endless ‘Tik-Tok made me buy it!’ content, so it only makes sense for our client, the entrepreneurship company Shopify, to partner with the app to introduce a new in-app shopping experience. Shopify merchants who have a TikTok business account will be able to create mini storefronts on their page where other TikTokers can view and purchase their products. These two apps are working together to make it easier for small businesses to succeed and reach new markets. This feature is currently only available in the US, UK, and for some Canadian merchants. 2021 Summer Elections

Believe it or not, 2019 was not four years ago. While many Canadians weren’t expecting to hit the polls until 2023, Justin Trudeau and the Liberal party have decided to call for a federal election earlier in August. On September 20, Canadians will be casting their vote for the next Prime Minister of Canada. With a pandemic, climate crisis, and economic recovery all on the table, this may be the most important election yet. Stay informed and cast your vote.

Lil Nas X x Taco Bell

Since the release of Old Town Road and its countless remixes, rapper and internet genius, Lil Nas X, has already made a strong impact on the music industry and pop culture as a whole, all before the release of his first studio album, ‘MONTERO’. Taco Bell is now hoping that he will have the same effect on their restaurants. Earlier this month Lil Nas X announced that he officially works at Taco Bell… again, this time as their first Chief Impact Officer. The fast-food restaurant chain hopes that this partnership will allow them to learn from Lil Nas X and unlock future opportunities for young people. Learn more about the partnership here.
